In our global information economy, ideas are key. However, on their own, ideas have little value. The successful businesses that make money are those that can turn their ideas into products and services, having given careful consideration to adequately protecting their intellectual property.

Shireen Smith will be delivering this workshop to advise SMEs on using intellectual property strategically to enhance business assets.

The workshop will cover:

  • What you can and can’t protect – the limits of IP.
  • Why trade marks matter whether or not you’re aiming to create a brand.
  • The 20% of actions you can take that give you 80% of the IP protection you need.
  • Real case studies and the learning points.

‘Secure Your Intellectual Property, Secure Your Business’ will run from 1pm to 3pm (GMT) on Thursday 19 January 2017 and costs £97+VAT per person (or £47+VAT for early birds!). The event includes sandwiches, refreshments and a copy of the book “Intellectual Property Revolution.”

Early bird tickets are available up until 8 January. Visit the Eventbrite page for more details and to book tickets.

Intellectual Property Revolution – Huge Success for Shireen Smith’s New Book

intellectual-property-revolution-cover-3d_jpgWe successfully celebrated IP lawyer Shireen Smith’s book launch on Tuesday, 13 October. The book reached number one in the Amazon Kindle charts for intellectual property, and is in the top three at the time of writing. Here is a link to Bloomberg’s coverage of the launch. The article highlights the importance of integrating IP into the branding process, among other things.

press release imageIntellectual Property Revolution is about how to successfully manage IP assets, protect brands and add value to businesses in the digital economy.  It is written in plain English and is intended for use by business owners and ‘brand guardians’.  Shireen believes that branded business owners – alongside branding agencies, designers and advertisers who support brand identities – are missing out by not integrating with an IP specialist to ensure that the brands and identities they create are sound from an intellectual property perspective and potentially valuable.

At the book launch event Shireen said, “One aspect of IP law is to determine ownership rights of intangible assets such as names, logos websites software music photos. The law can be a minefield in the area because the person who is assumed to be the owner of an asset is not necessarily the owner. This is why it is important to consult an IP lawyer early in a business’ development.

“If names are chosen without involving a trade mark expert, the business is at risk of losing out.  The loss isn’t necessarily always apparent.  A poor choice of name relative to the business’ goals can lead to a constant loss of value or difficulty in securing registration either in the UK or in other countries.”

The later in a business’ development a rebranding takes place, the more damaging it can be.  For the majority of start-up businesses, resources are limited so many business owners experience fearfulness or trepidation towards consulting lawyers with open-ended fees.  Azrights offers fixed-price packages to encourage start-ups to protect their assets.

Azrights Intellectual Property Team To Participate In The London Legal Walk

London Legal WalkThe London Legal Walk is an annual event that brings together lawyers from all practice areas. Lawyers from solicitors firms and barristers chambers, in house legal teams, charities, companies, magazines, and more, of all levels of seniority will be taking part in support of the London Legal Support Trust charity. This year the walk will be led by the Lord Chief Justice, Lord Thomas, and Master of the Rolls, Lord Dyson, and will include walkers from 495 teams.

Funds are raised to support free legal advice charities in London and the South East. Walkers are expected to gain sponsors and then many law firms, chambers and companies add to that with matched funding or donations. Some noted participants include Allen & Overy, Baker & McKenzie and LexisNexis. This year, the Headline National Gold Sponsor is The Law Society. Legal Walk Map

We at Azrights support this cause because in reality, not everyone has access to justice. Apparently two-thirds of the UK population don’t know how to get legal advice and 13 million people who live in poverty can’t afford to pay for legal support. The London Legal Support Trust works with a variety of charities to provide services.

On Monday 18 May 2015 from 17:30, the Azrights team will be joining numerous other firms and charities to complete the walk. The team will be walking 10K beginning and ending at the Royal Courts of Justice on Carey Street.

This being the 11th anniversary of the walk, it is hoped to exceed the record £560,000 raised last year!

If you are interested in sponsoring the Azrights team, please visit our fundraising page.

Thank you for your support!
